Quake 4 Review

The latest title is out in id Software’s Quake series, Quake 4. Each time id has released a Quake title they push the limits of gaming technology. This time is no different. Quake 4 definitely puts some good use to its Doom 3 engine with this title.

While the game has multiplayer built in with 5 different game types: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Arena Capture the Flag, and Tournament play, Single Player mode is a force to be reckoned with. Everything you expect from the Quake series is there, as well as everything you thought you were going to get with Doom 3.

In total there are 10 weapons that you upgrade while playing through Single Player. Two of the weapons have a flashlight built in so you don’t run into any visibility issues. Many of the weapons have been upgraded in amazing ways, but thats for you to figure out.

The sounds in this game were done very well, however a lot of them seemed like they were recycled from Doom 3, which is why I gave a little bit lower of a score. Other than that the sound was great. There is never really a silent part in the game, you always hear something, whether it be ambient background sound while you are in the Strogg facilities, or the different squads you help out throughout the game.

There are many different types of beautifully detailed enemies, too many to count actually. Everything is robotic, and extremely tough with a bad attitude. Most of the enemies take multiple shots, even from the rocket launcher. Aside from being hard, they are intelligent, they dodge your bullets, and hide from your attacks.

The level design is marvelous. A lot of time went into designing these levels, and it shows. Each level is highly detailed with tons of realistic looking objects littering the hallways and rooms. Good job artists.

Along with the beautifully designed levels are the cut scenes, which in my opinion tie this game together into a work of art. A lot of the scenes are long, and somewhat interactive but they are all skipable by simply hitting escape, but they are worth the watch.

Overall I though Quake 4 was an amazing game and took the Doom 3 technology to a whole new level. I look forward to the next game in the series, if one comes out.
